Enfant Au Ballon (Child with Ball)
by Max H. Gerbier
Oil on canvas.
Max Gerbier was born in Milo near CapHaitien in northern Haiti on September 10, 1951. He comes out of the workshop of the great master Philome Obin after receiving
encouragement from Harrison Obin. He started to paint at the Centre d'Art in 1973. Gerbier typically paints scenes of daily life set in the local landscape, Gerbier notably exhibited work in Brooklyn in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In 1986, Gerbier relocated to Montreal, Canada. Since then,
many of his paintings have depicted the distinctly changing seasons Gerbier has witnessed in Canada.
This simple and sweet painting captures the pure joy of a young boy playing with a ball, something that all of us, around the globe, can relate to and appreciate.
Untitled (Portrait of a Boy)
by Carel Blain
Oil on canvas
Carel Blain, born on September 23, 1961 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As a beginner, Blain worked with great artists such as Lesly Exume, Francoise Jean and the late Carlo Dayan among others. Carel specializes in portraits of children. He started painting children's portraits and village scenes in the 1990’s.
Blain is also a respected art teacher in Haiti. Jonas Exume and Sancois Francois are two of his most noteworthy students. His work has been exhibited in New York City, Florida, and in Haiti. Blain lives in Petion-Ville and he continues to paint.
This portrait of a boy wearing a straw hat is very typical of Blain’s work.
Carnival by Josias Bellanous
oil on Masonite
This painting depicts a Haitian Carnival celebration with groups of maskers, including children, parading through the streets. It's painted in the Cap-Haitien style.
Untitled (Baptism Party) by Eugene Jean
oil on board
Eugène Jean was born in 1951 at Trou du Nord. Jean first worked with Haitian paint-er Philomé Obin. He has been a member of the Centre d'Art since 1971 and has had several exhibitions in the United States. Jean typically paints common scenes of daily life, sometimes with overtones of humor.
This painting depicts a baptism celebration with three infants featured in the foreground. Cakes and a radio set on the table indicate that the party is about to begin.
The painting is done in the Cap-Haitien style, with a rather pastel palette, some use of linear perspective, and flat areas of color contrasted with passages of fine detail.
