Polish Legions fighting with Haitian Legions. Approximately 5,500 Polish legionnaires were sent by Napoleon to augment his French troops in the battle to reestablish slavery in the colony of Saint-Domingue. Though it remains unclear why, many of the Polish legionnaires defected to Dessalines' army to fight against the French.
