This painting, like many in this exhibition, was donated to the Waterloo Center for the Arts’ permanent collection by Janet Feldman. Feldman amassed a huge collection of art from Haiti, Mexico, and other cultures, then donated the bulk of that collection to WCA. Feldman had a great eye for unique pieces like this one.
On Christmas Eve in Haiti, it is hoped that Santa (known as Tonton Nwel) will visit. Children place their newly-cleaned shoes, filled with straw under the tree. If they’ve been good, Santa will remove the straw and place presents in and around the shoes.
