If you look closely you will see three pronged symbols on their dresses (known as veve) to used to invoke the Marasa. These goddesses of children and childbirth are often depicted as twins, or as in this painting, triplets. As with certain West African religions that inspired Vodou, twins are highly praised among Vodou believers. However, all childbirth is seen as a magical creation of life, summarized in the paradoxical phrase, "one and one making three."
