Haitian revolutionary and self-proclaimed emperor (1804-6). Manuscript D.S., in French, stationary imprinted with a royal emblem under which are the printed words, “Jacques I, Emperor,” small 4to, “At the Palace,” October 15, 1804. The document reads, “Please citizen administrator, place at my disposal nine hundred traveling flasks [gourdes]…” He signs in a large hand, “J. On New Years Day, 1804, Dessalines proclaimed Haiti an independent republic and was named governor-general for life. That October, the time of the document, Dessalines declared himself Emperor. He was assassinated two years later by former fellows Henri Christophe and Alexandre Sabes Petion near Port-au-Prince. A document from an important year in the history of Haiti.
