Portals to the Sun by Sevyn De La Cruz

Portals to the Sun is a meditation on portals. Thresholds where the body, memory, and spirit converge. Portals are not only places but moments: a breath, a prayer, a movement, a word. They are the subtle openings through which we catch wind of ourselves and remember who we are. Spaces where we can co-create with the universe, a blank slate. This blank slate being a star. Ready to catapult your desire.

This body of work emerges from a somatic exploration of the inner archive. Through playfulness and joy, I access embodied memories rooted in my motherland, Quisqueya. Each piece acts as a portal into remembrance, an excavation of the light buried deep within us. Through the body, truths surface that cannot be intellectualized but must be felt, lived, and carried.

My practice is one of remembrance and return. I am guided by sacred wombmen, my greatest mirrors. In my life they reveal portals of reflection, care, and becoming. Within their presence, I witness the ways our bodies hold ancestral passageways. To move through a portal is to walk with yourself while walking with those who came before you. Their memory lives in our gestures, in our breath, in our becoming.

In this work, wombman are oracles. Our bodies are portals, vessels that carry life, memory, intuition, and possibility. Portals to the Sun becomes a space where wombman claim presence, take up space, and co-create the fruits of the future.

The sun in this work represents truth, surrender, and joy. It is the light we move toward and the light we carry within us. In a time when Amerikkka fractures and collapses under its own violence, sisterhood emerges as a powerful portal. One that opens toward resistance, collective care, and transformation.

To enter a portal is to remember: the light has always lived within us.

A show dedicated to the ancestors of Quisqueya and the powerful black woman in my bloodline.

Thank you for teaching me to be sovereign and free spirited.
