Oil on canvas
The central subject in this painting is a young boy who brings an offering of birds that he has trapped home to his mother. The mother wears a white dress with blue polka-dots and a red scarf is wrapped around her head. The young boy wears blue denim. Bigaud incorporates many interesting details into the country home interior setting. This includes a bed, an altar, some hanging clothing, a small cook-fire, and a desk with many home objects on it. Which of these objects do you have in your home? Which do you not? A neighbor or other family member peers in through the open window in the center of the frame to witness the sweet scene. As the viewer, you may feel a bit like the neighbor, peering, unnoticed into this scene.
Artist Bio: Wilson Bigaud was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1928. At age 18, he met Dewitt Peters and joined the Centre d'Art. In 1950, his painting, "Paradise", won second prize in an international art exhibit and was subsequently purchased by the Museum of Modern Art.
