Description

The three women in this painting offer a close up representation of market women. In Haiti, women's work is critical to the country's ecnomy. They carry goods and produce in baskets on their heads to the market to sell and trade, providing for their families and communities. In addition to chickens, the women also carry syrup in the large jars, used in coffee and oatmeal. Notice also that all three women are wearing crosses, reflecting the place of religion in daily life and within community.
