Caiman, Bois (Haiti)
Haiti--History--Revolution, 1791-1804

Description

Dutty Boukman, an educated Muslim slave who inspired the Haitian Revolution, is depicted here with broken chains suggesting the liberation for which he fought and died. The shell in Boukman's left hand references slaves use of shells to communicate in ways Europeans could not understand. The figures shown in the smoke rising from the battle represent the meeting at Bois Caiman where Boukman prophesied a successful revolt.
