Subject

Saget, Jean-Nicolas Nissage, 1810-1880
Haiti. President

Description

SAGET, NISSAGE. President of Haiti. Manuscript of an Act and Amnesty, Signed by Saget as Provisional President, in French, 1-page 4to, Saint-Marc, Sept. 20, 1868. He issues complete amnesty to all soldiers and citizens who will rally to his flag and who will abandon the rebels, Salnave and Victorin, who are exempt from this amnesty. The commandments of the departments, arondissements, etc. are to enforce the present act. This was written during a period of devastating civil war out of which Saget and other liberals came to power, but failed in their attempts to establish a constitutional republican government. The left side of the document has been torn, affecting the text somewhat, but still a manuscript of important and dramatic content.
