Oil on board
This painting depicts a Haitian Carnival celebration with groups of maskers, mostly children, parading through the streets. In the background there are mountains and trees. In the town scene, there are five houses, all painted in muted colors. In the foreground are two adults surrounded by children, some of whom are playing drums but most of whom are walking or dancing. It's painted in the Cap-Haitien style. The children are all painted in bright colors and the atmosphere is celebratory. While people of all ages participate in the Haitian Carnival celebration, why do you think Bellanous chose to focus on the children? What emotions do images of children in celebration evoke in you?
